What are the main causes of kidney disease?

The two main causes of chronic kidney disease are diabetes and high blood pressure, which are responsible for up to two-thirds of the cases. Other risk factors include heart disease, obesity, a family history of CKD, past damage to the kidneys and older age.

Strategies for slowing progression: Improved blood pressure control. Controlling blood pressure is probably the most effective intervention to slow progressive kidney disease. ACE inhibitors/ARBs for blood pressure control and to reduce albuminuria.
